How Long Does An MOT Take?

Your car needs an MOT every 12 months unless you’ve bought it brand new, in which case it’ll need an annual MOT after its third year. Since we all lead such busy lives these days, a common question asked about MOTs is how long it takes. This month, Auto Exhausts & Tyres are here to answer the question and more.

How long does an MOT take?

An MOT, on average, can take between 45 minutes to an hour. It should be noted that if you opt for an MOT and servicing as well, this will take longer as there will be more work to do.

What is being checked and why?

An MOT is essentially a safety check to ensure your car is fit to be driven on the roads. Here is a quick list of the things checked on an MOT:

  • Tyres and wheels
  • Seat belts
  • Lights and electrics
  • Brakes
  • Steering and suspension
  • Windscreen and wipers
  • Exhaust and emissions
  • Bodywork and reg plates

What can you do while you wait?

There are several options for you while we perform your MOT. Firstly, we’re always happy for you to wait while we perform the test, but you might get bored. The good news is Valentine Retail Park is just up the road (Tritton Road, going towards Lincoln city centre) and it’s only a 9-minute walk away. There you can find shops such as Next and TK Maxx, as well as a Costa Coffee to help pass the time.

Alternatively, if you’re unable to stick around until the test is done, we’re happy for you to come back and collect your vehicle later in the day. This is often more convenient for people who work or are busy during the day, as you can drop your car off in the morning and collect it after work.

To book your MOT appointment today, simply contact our professional team and we’ll be happy to find a slot which suits your schedule. You can also ask us about combining your MOT with a service to keep your car in the best condition to avoid a breakdown.
